Kessler Custom Bass Clarinet Neck
Our 2nd Generation Low C Bass Clarinet is the most popular instrument in our store! It offers players the perfect blend of performance, features (the Low C & double register key specifically) and affordability. It is being used by a wide range of players ranging from students in schools to professionals on Broadway! There is simply so much to love about this instrument!
Since our line of bass clarinets release in 2008 with the 1st Generation Low C, there have been steady improvements made on the line. Most notable was the jump to the current 2nd Generation model series in 2017. The 2nd Generation Low C Bass Clarinet quickly became the best selling instrument in our store – our entire store! We have continued to make small and steady changes to the 2nd Generation Low C Bass Clarinet in order to provide the best instrument possible at an affordable price. In 2022, we put effort into improving the neck on our bass clarinet.
New Heavy Mass Neck
The neck is being improved with more mass to the tubing of the neck. This is being done with the use of heavier alloys for the tubing and center receiver as well as more an added plate on the neck. This heavier neck will improve the tonal core of the instrument as well as improve the articulation and response in the clarion range of the bass clarinet. The fundamental design/shape of the neck is not changing, but this added mass is a solid improvement on tone and response throughout the range of the instrument.
Finish Options
Our new heavy mass bass clarinet neck will be offered in the standard 2 finishes as well as a few alternate finishes.
-
- Standard Nickel Plate – This is our standard finish on our Low C & Low Eb Models
- Midnight Finish – This is our all black model for our Midnight Model Low C
- Polished & Lacquered – This allows you to see the various metals used in the neck which is a stunning 3 color neck
All of these models use the same design and materials as each other, simply a different external finish.
How much heavier is it?
We have through the years actually produced 4 total neck generations. Each time, the acoustic design stayed the same, but the metals & thicknesses changed. The first 2 neck revisions were done to try and improve strength of the neck. The final change was done to improve the tone (this current heavy mass design). Here is a list of all 4 of the neck revision changes:
-
- Neck version 1 – Thin walled nickel-silver / brass combo – weighs approx. 163-165 grams (2017-2019 production)
- Neck version 2 – Nickel-silver / brass combination – weighs approx. 171-173 grams (2019-2021, 2022)
- Neck version 3 – all yellow brass – weighs approx.. 167-169 grams (mid to end of 2021)
- Neck version 4 – current heavy mass – rose brass tubing / nickel-silver center / brass tenons – weighs approx. 187-189 grams (2023 – current)
So as you can see, this heavy mass model is roughly 10-15% heavier than previous generations.

I have been very happy with the 2nd Generation Kessler bass clarinet, but the new neck elevates the instrument to a whole new level. Everything that the copy says on the website is true and more. There seems to be more core to the sound, crossing the break is smoother, and everything above the break is much more responsive. It came on Friday and I have played 5 shows on the Wicked tour with it and I can’t say enough good things about it. A really great neck.
