Julius Keilwerth MKX Tenor Sax
The Julius Keilwerth MKX Tenor Sax Series marks the next evolution of the saxophone for this historic brand. By combining tonal characteristics of the legendarySX90R along with physical characteristics reminiscent of vintage saxophones, the MKX Tenor Sax Series allows the player to have the best of both worlds; a modern sound with a vintage feel.
The name MKX Tenor Sax was chosen to pay tribute to those who have contributed to or inspired the development of this new line. The letters “MK” represent Markneukirchen, the historic town in the same region of eastern Germany where the Julius Keilwerth brand began in 1925. Boasting a long history of musical instrument makers and manufacturers, Markneukirchen is now home to the factory and skilled workers who carry on the traditions of their forefathers, and whose craftsmanship is essential to the quality of this instrument.
In honoring the kinship to the legendaryJulius Keilwerth SX90R Series, the letter “X” reminds us of the influence and inspiration from those who paved the way for our success. While the MKX Tenor Sax and SX90R series do share some characteristics, they can be likened to cousins who share a common blood line, but have individual qualities and personalities that allow them a unique voice of their own.
The Julius Keilwerth MKX Tenor Sax Series is a professional level saxophone that will offer German quality engineering and manufacturing at prices competitive to the global scale, and allow a new generation of musicians to use Keilwerth Saxophones in bringing their voice to the world stage.
How does the MKX Tenor Sax compare to the SX90R?
The MKX Tenor Sax is a horn that is designed to offer much of the sonic performance of the Keilwerth SX90R pro models. The neck and bell are virtually identical to those on the SX90R series horns. The body though offers a slightly tighter bore more in line with the French and Japanese saxophones. This combination gives the Keilwerth sound a little more focus and core. So for the player coming from a good intermediate horn (many of which are based on French bore concepts), the MKX Tenor Sax will feel a little more comfortable in its response and intonation characteristics, while still offering the larger tonal presence of the Keilwerth design.
For the player coming from a pro Keilwerth, the MKX Tenor Sax will feel a little tighter than the SX90R models. This gives them a horn that is a little easier to control in certain playing situations where they might not want as much power as the SX90R models provide.
The end result of this fusion of performance design concepts produces a horn that is very versatile for any player and offers performance not easily matched by other horns in its price range!
Where is the MKX Saxophone Manufactured?
The MKX Tenor Sax models are a 100% European made horn, with the majority of the manufacturing being performed in Germany at the Keilwerth facility. Keilwerth doesn’t publically declare the exact percentage of what is made where, but they do state that it is 100% European sourced. Most horns at this price range cannot make this claim with many being made in Taiwan. With the MKX Tenor Sax, you get a fully European made sax from a major manufacturer with a long history of providing high quality professional saxophones – all at a price that is more affordable for the average musician.
Every horn we send out to a customer is not released from us unless it has been completely setup in our shop first. This is because the setup on the horn is of the utmost importance! Sometimes, a saxophone (regardless of who the manufacturer or the price point is) comes in needing 20 minutes of adjustments and then the very next one can require 2 hours! So if you were to get 5 of the same model right out of the box, they will all play different which leads people to believe that they are “good” or “bad” saxes… but the reality is that the one that was the best out of the 5 was likely the one that needed the least amount of work and on the flip side, the “bad” sax was the one that needed 2 hours worth of adjustments!
Once the same 5 saxophones are properly regulated and adjusted to perfection, they become near identical saxophones that even the pickiest of players would be challenged to pick a true “favorite” horn. However, since most stores do not or even can not perform this setup, the player never knows this and is simply relying on the luck of the draw. This is why we perform our setup (in our www.SaxophoneRepairs.com ProShop) on them before delivering your new sax to you. You trust us with your purchase and we want to make sure that you are rewarded by giving you your ideal saxophone setup flawlessly!
