Cocobolo Wood Closeout
Cocobolo wood is a beautiful wood with a lighter feel in the hands but a more open tone that is quicker in response when compared to Grenadilla. However, Cocobolo is a very unique looking wood with a lot of variation to it’s cosmetic. As a result, when Backun manufactures a clarinet out of Cocobolo, they make sure that the 2 main body joints are cut from 1 straight piece of wood. This is so that the cosmetic of the body and the grain of the wood lines up and matches. This creates additional cost and manufacturing headache as it also means that if there is a small flaw in 1 of the pieces of wood, BOTH pieces have to be abandoned in manufacturing.
For this reason, Backun has decided that they will no longer offer the Protege clarinet out of Cocobolo wood. They will reserve the Cocobolo wood for the Model F & Custom models moving forward. Knowing this, we bought the entire USA remaining inventory of Cocobolo wood Protege clarinets! Once they are gone, they are gone for good! Get your new clarinet today while supply lasts!
The Backun Protege Clarinet is available in 2 different woods: Grenadilla & Cocobolo. There are many differing opinions on which is best and even differing opinions on what the wood does to the sound. So here are the personal opinions of Dave Kessler in regards to these woods:
Grenadilla is the same wood that most clarinets are made out of. Backun uses a premium quality, unstained Grenadilla for the Backun Protege clarinet. I find that the Grenadilla will produce a more tonally centered and deeper tone that the audience will hear as darker and richer. Personally, I always prefer the way that customers sound on the Grenadilla as I listen to them. However, the effect of the wood “behind” the clarinet will make the player perceive the Grenadilla as a bit brighter and more focused than the Cocobolo wood.
Cocobolo is a very dense wood and like the Grenadilla, Backun uses a premium quality, unstained Cocobolo for the Backun Protege clarinet. I find that the Cocobolo gives a broader and sweeter tone that is more open that the audience will hear as brighter and lighter. However, the player “behind” the clarinet will generally perceive the Cocobolo as the richer of the two because they are “hearing more” from the clarinet than they do with the Grenadilla.
